We are certainly living in interesting times – a few AI winters later, and since the start in the early 2000s, it seems Neural Networks have emerged triumphant. It wasn’t so long ago, that expert systems founded on logic, reigned supreme.
Fast forward to Oct’24 – Prof Geoffrey Hinton and Sir Demis Hassabis wins twin combo Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry respectively!
All the other laureates – Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for Physio and Medicine, Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson, for Economics – all convened in Stockholm for an exchange of minds – in the program, the Nobel laureates meet for a conversation about opportunities and risks with AI, about conditions for democracy and economic equality. The program is presented by the BBC’s Zeinab Badawi.; brilliant conversation about humanity in general. Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel took part in the recording of Nobel Minds 2024 in the Bernadotte Library at the Royal Palace.
Humanity has to come together, and fast. We have to think about how we navigate Short-term Turbulence (next 5-7 years) to achieve Long-term Abundance – the ‘Fork’ as I call it in my Genesis book – that will get us hurtling towards either Star Trek or Mad Max realities. So much is at stake. Humanity is at stake – given AI might well probably be humanity’s final invention.
